The 1 surprising food you should put in the fridge to retain their ‘cr

There’s an age-old debate whether some foods belong in the fridge or the cupboard, like ketchup, chocolate or eggs. But now, experts are recommending that one unexpected food should be stored in the fridge as we get ready for another mini-heatwave this weekend.

Food experts said that the popular snack will stay satisfyingly crunchy and won’t go soggy if stored in the fridge while temperatures climb. Richard Price, a grocery expert from BritSuperstore, insists that chocolate biscuits – including favourites like chocolate digestives, Penguin bars, and Blue Riband – should all be kept in the fridge, especially during this week and next to keep them fresh and crunchy.

Even though putting chocolate in the fridge can be controversial, the chocolate coating can cause biscuits to go soggy as temperatures rise.

Richard explained that refrigerating the pack helps keep the chocolate layer in tact, and ensures the biscuit stays crisp and fresh.

It’s not just biscuits that need storing differently during the hot weather – he also recommends changes for other common foods during a heatwave.

Crisps lose their crispness and even go stale in warm surroundings, so he suggested storing them in an airtight container to keep them extra fresh and crunchy, especially in humid conditions.

Cakes with chocolate or cream fillings can be at risk of melting or spoiling in hot temperatures, so the fridge also helps extend their shelf life, but he reminded cooks to cover them to avoid them drying out.

A produce expert from Hitchcock Farms, Dan Holt, also recommended a storage hack to keep lettuce fresh for up to a month longer, by storing it with tin foil.

While Lucia Washbrook, sales and marketing director at potato brand Nanna Tate, explained that potatoes can last longer by being kept in a dark place, or in a cotton or hessian storage bag that blocks the light.
