You can keep bananas fresh for an impressive 26 days with a simple method shared by a number of people online. Bananas can be difficult to keep fresh and too often, and we open the fridge or the cupboard to find that they have gone brown or mushy. There are many ways bananas ripen faster, such as when they are placed beside other fruits. However, there are planty of ways you can make your bananas last longer.
One of those methods has been tried and tested by a number of creators on platforms like TikTok, who have shown how easy it is to do it and stop your bananas from browning for as long as 26 days. Amy Cross, also known as @amycrosslegacy on TikTok, shared her clever trick for storing bananas to keep them fresher for longer. She shows just how effective the trick is by demonstrating how fresh her bananas look almost a month after buying them.
The method involves chopping bananas with the peels still on and placing them in a jar which is then put in the fridge.
Amy shows the chopped banana in the fridge, explaining that it has remained fresh and good to eat even 26 days after she bought it from a supermarket. She describes the storage method as perfect if you only want to eat half a banana and keep the other half for later.
“These are the bananas I purchased on March 13 and I cut this into thirds and put it into a jar, so they’re 26 days old,” she says in the clip.
“So the whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I can get a cut banana to last 12 hours and it’s been 26 days.”
There are a number of ways to avoid your bananas going brown too soon.
One of them is to keep them well clear of other fruits as certain gases emitted by things like avocados and strawberries will make bananas ripen faster.
Additionally, they should be stored in a cool place and shouldn’t be kept in paper or plastic bags, as a build up of gas from ripening will speed up the process.
When it comes to Amy’s genius banana storage hack, other TikTok users shared their appreciation for the trick. One person commented under the video: “This is awesome. Going to try this after my next grocery run next week. As I only go once a month, has it’s a 40 minute drive to the store to get organic bananas.
“I get 30 bananas to have one a day. Been keeping them in my fridge. The flavor isn’t too bad, but they do turn completely black.”
Another shared: “Wow! I’m impressed. Those suckers are usually speckled within a few days, nevermind 26 of them!”
