Making this mistake could incur a hefty fee in repairs, say cleaning experts. Cleaning your guttering is an important job to ensure it doesn’t get blocked, but there’s one method that could cause problems instead of helping to keep things clear.
If you’re planning to clean your gutter, which is a job you might already be putting off, it’s important to use the right methods. Jess Thomas, drainage expert and director of Drainage Central, is urging homeowners not to use pressure washers to clean their guttering, citing significant repair bills and serious safety hazards.
The financial implications of the damage caused by a pressure washer can be substantial.
Replacing uPVC guttering can cost an average of £30 per metre, with this doubling to £60 per metre for cast iron systems.
“Gutters are designed to manage rainwater flow, not withstand the force of water exerted by a pressure washer”, Jess explains.
“The force from the jet can easily split seams, loosen joints and potentially even detach sections of your guttering from your home”.
Pressure washing guttering can also damage the roof of your home, Jess says: “The intense jet of water from a pressure washer can compromise your roof, its underlay and structural integrity if aimed wrongly.
“Some guttering systems can be attached to roofing, and pressure washing can loosen roof slates. Loose roof tiles are a safety risk, and they can cost up to £500 to replace depending on the circumstances.”
Cleaning your own guttering can be risky, especially if you are working from a height on a ladder due to balance issues and an increased risk of falling so ensure to be safe while you’re completing the job.
You should consider hiring a professional and Jess recommends cleaning gutters twice a year to keep them in good condition and reduce the risk of problems arising from blocked guttering.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure you won’t incur any extra costs due to needing to make repairs on your home.
